I am continuing to work within the field in which I am familiar; however, I am open to working within different aspects of my field. I am open to teaching, administration and scoring of standardized tests, providing continuing education services to agencies or foster care families, working as a mobile crisis counselor/or assessor, etc. In this field, there are many various applications of our degree and I know there are many agencies, private practices, and businesses seeking individuals willing to work hours and days other than 8-5 Monday through Friday. I am such a person due to currently pursuing my doctoral degree in clinical psychology. I have no problem making up my hours on weekends, holidays, and evenings. I love working with adolescents, which others find a challenge.

Honestly I did not enjoy my job in the military (aviation operations specialist). It was very tedious at times, and extremely stressful. With that said i know it would be smart to get certified in something i have spent so many years doing.

Been talking with friends online. One works for the railroad as an engineer. Says its good pay. I been thinking about a job like that. But says that they can lay you off with no reason. Would really like more info if anyone knows about what it might take to get on. I know its a union job.

Also I would like to share. Getting on with HEB the grocery store is a pain at times. I’ve been trying to get on with them for years now . You have to apply online at there site with them . Then take an evaluation test. What they don’t tell you that I later on found out. Your score in 3 levels (green) they will call you back , (yellow) still want you and will call you (red) you won’t get a call . All depends on how long it takes you to finish the evaluation and what responses you give. You have to focus on answering with the customer is always right etc. Then if you pass you go threw a phone interview . After that a one on one interview. And finally a group interview. Some HEB’s like the one in woodway require you to sell a product that is sitting under your chair in front of everyone to one of the managers there.
At the end they will say there gonna go out of the room and call names out one at a time . What they don’t tell you is if you get called then you aren’t getting the job. They say to wait for a phone call within 24 hrs or apply back again. They wait until they get rid of anyone that isn’t getting hired . Then tell the reamining applicants about doing there drug tests etc. And they make it on . =(

After college, I chose to work at the family construction business instead of pursuing a career in my major field of study, marketing. I left there and went to work for a plumbing company after receiving a lucrative offer, but it did not turn out to be a great fit for me. I now want to find a career that better utilizes the skills I obtained earning my BBA from Baylor University, whether it be a marketing position or something similar.

I love retail but somewhere down the road I grew out of it. I would like to say its because of the pressure from higher authority and the fact that nights and weekends becomes a problem.I never got a chance to spend time with my family or friends. I work so much. So now that Iam older I do not want to miss out on things in life, like dinner with my family, chruch services, events or even birthdays. I am in college(MCC)taking up social work and I love it. I have always been a people person and I love helping people so this works out for me. I would love to work morning shifts and have my weekends off never experience that before.

Nursing is just not what it use to be. People are not in it for the right reasons anymore. Private care i would much rather do if i had to stay in this field but its just so hard to find a private care person. I just keep telling myself that i want a job Monday thru Friday from 8am to 3,4 or 5pm and by 5:30pm I want to be on my way home. I want a change, I need a change & a part of me doesn’t care about the money. You know my bestfriend asked me a long time ago if i could do any job and dont get paid to do it & would make me happy. What would it be? I said a coach and working with young girls that have been through some of the things that I have been through in my life. Well i’m still looking for the door to be open & job. Charles,
My feeling is that it is better to use the job search web sites to find the position and company that you are looking for and then go directly to the company web site to apply for the job. The problem that I have run into in the past with posting on job sites is that you get overloaded with junk emails about jobs that you may not be interested in working for the company or what that particular position. The exception to that is the Vetjobs site if you are a veteran.

If it is going to be a one-on-one format, then, you will be notified of your specific appointment time. If it is going to be an open job fair, then the time will be determined at the time that decision is made. However, definitely, look for more details as they evolve. I was working as an editor for a health education company, which included doing original research and writing as well as copyediting, proofing, and writing a lot of marketing copy. I enjoy using research, writing, and organizational skills, and I have been looking for jobs that use those skills. I enjoyed writing about health-related topics, but I’d certainly be interested in writing about other topics, too.

During my career I have gained a wealth of experince and knowledge that can be applied to many different fields. However, I am finding that most of the postions offered that meet my talents and skills either require a degree or relocation. Moving is cerainly an option but, not at this time. With more than 20 years of experience in the field of broadcasting I have a great deal of experience in public relations, event planning and promotions, artist and band management, studio production, on-air, news direction, copy-writing, commercial production, sales and marketing to name a few. I have traveled extensively as a Regional Public Affairs Manager handling FCC compliance and Public Affairs for one of the largest broadcast organizations in the world. My greatest challenge so far is that the postions I am qualified also require a bachelor’s degree. This has been most frustrating. I’m finding I’m way over-qualified or I match everything the postion requires…execpt a degree.

I am looking for a career change; however, since I am over 50 it has been difficult. There have been many challenges in my life time and I attempt to tackle all head-on. My work experience has included production, data-entry, clerical. Customer Service is my preference, there are so many resources out there that people need, but don’t ask the right questions or don’t know what questions to ask. I have always learned about the job I’m doing so well that I seek all resources available and share.

I have enlisted on the website “CareerBuilders” and this is a great area to seek employment in different areas of work and location. Be aware that there are scam agents out there that are using the heading of “CareerBuilders” to con you into illegal doings. I have encounter such a scam and turned them into the appropriate authorities, so be careful who you may sign up with for career opportunties.

Other career websites that maybe useful are the following:
    1. Jobsnearyou.net;

How important is an objective statement on a resume?
Often, people tell us to include an objective statement on a resume. However, there are few people who think that it doesn’t matter. Is it important to have one?
Though many people are very focused about their job field, I am sure there are many people with multiple interests. How would one go about having an objetive statement when applying for multiple positions in different functions (say Finance, Strategy etc.) at the same target firm.

Thanks for the suggestions about the school Jeff and about Cedar Crest ljwp. Cedar Crest is too far south for where I’m trying to be due to wanting to move towards Dallas eventually. I’m currently driving there 1-2 days a week for school depending on the semester. In the fall I begin practicum in Waxahachie two days a week and my classes in Dallas will be from 1-9pm on Tuesday. I’m hoping to find something that will allow me to work day, evening, and weekends so I can make up for when I’m needing to do practicum. Most schools might not allow that. A lot of schools also want school counselors (Licensed Specialized School Psychologists), which I am not, but I’m definitely going to check into those leads, because schools have ready access to children and adolescents and they are my favorite population! Thanks!

It will cut the individual therapy rate by 20% and family therapy rate by 10%. I have to let her know soon whether or not I’ll be able to continue working there when the contract changes on September 1st. Right now I can’t afford not to because I don’t have another job, but at those rates, I can’t afford to. I really NEED to find another job. Anyone with leads, I really appreciate it! Thanks.

I’ve been looking at jobs relating to my work experience in production management and also looking at possibilities for working in an administrative/clerical role which is similar to the work I’ve had over the past 9 years as a contractor. While the management role is probably more lucrative, I’m leaning more toward the admin type work. In my particular case, I feel like the declaration of my work experience and previous job positions are really a negative in searching for something new and different. The best possibilities right now seem to be with health care (Scott & White in particular has several admin job openings right now).

Sorry to hear about the position, Mac. Thank you for the info. The next time I have a problem with it, I’ll contact her.

Melvin, you mentioned in another job club meeting that the objective statement on resumes sometimes confuse employers because they might have a position that you could do, but you may end up “pigeon holing” yourself in their eyes where they just toss your resume to the side and look at another one just because of that objective statement. This is the reason many resumes no longer contain them. A lot of that same information that could have been contained in an objective statement could be contained in a cover letter while addressing whichever positions you may be applying for. In this way, should they have similar positions at the facility that your qualifications and skills match, you won’t be automatically pushed to the side on the basis of what you put in or left out of your resume.

Mr. Collins you had asked questions earlier if it is important to have an objective. I don’t think it is as important as having a “Summary of Qualifications” listed so that they can see up front everything you can do. I feel that this can help the employer see first hand your qualifications before seeing your past employers. But on the other hand some employers ask for your objectives when you apply for some positions.

As I told Jeff when I emailed him separately, you are never too old to go back to school. There are actually studies that show empirically that anything you do to keep your mind sharp may actually help to ward off things such as dementia and alzheimer’s (such as going back to school, crossword puzzles, brain teasers, sudoku puzzles, etc). When I went back for my Master’s Degree there was a 65 year old woman just beginning her Master’s Degree. I have worked for the past 11 years and am now beginning the 3rd year of my Doctorate. There are people in their 40’s and 50’s entering the same program I’m in alongside those in their 20’s. Never sell yourself short!

There is a new discussion topic related to resumes under Job Club, now. Apparantly, this one is still tied to the 7/16/2012 topic.

    jeridsmith,

Having been in business and being a Union Contractor several years ago, we hired Union employees through the designated Unions. If interested in this field, I recommend you contact the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union, they can explain the process of becoming an apprentice and getting you signed up correctly. If you have trouble finding the number, contact the AGC (Associated General Contractors) in Waco located on Waco Drive next to El Conquistador.
Hope this helps get you started!

    Good Morning,
I believe that an objective statement is important on a resume. It does not have to be labeled as such on your resume. Instead it can be a short introductory paragraph under the title or type of job that you are looking for or applying for. Below is a comment from a professional career counseling service that I have been using.

“A professional objective defines the kind of work you want to do within your profession, making it easier for the people you talk with to know exactly what it is you are looking for and be of optimal assistance to you. If you are a human resources professional, for instance, it is important to let people know what kind of human resources position you are looking for (e.g., recruiting, compensation and benefits).”

Your skills or qualifications that define your expertise can be listed below this statement.

    Hope this helps.

I seem to be systematically excluded from some desirable positions due to age (unable to commit to a long term future with an employer) or “recent” history of work in a particular field. For instance a professor position at MCC, but no recent history of teaching though I taught extensively for years prior to retiring.

Use a cover letter customized for the particular job you are applying for and include it with your standard resume if you’re in a hurry. Customize the resume to target the job you’re applying for if possible.

I am currently searching for a job in the accounting/bookkeeping field. I am however considering other options such as maybe getting into Human Resources, or even going back to school to get an associate’s degree in a technical field.
