On August 15th we will be placing many of you for face to face interviews with employers at our Showcase event. Are You Ready? Look at yourself in the mirror and decide if you like what you see. Is there something you would like to change? If so, what is it?

If you would like help from the Job Club take a picture and upload it to your profile so we can critique it. Once we have reviewed your picture it can be taken down if you so desire. Sometimes the latest styles are not the best for job interviews.

We have promised our employers an array of presentable applicants. Our count of employers is increasing daily and their expectations are high. We have 15 days and counting until the event. Please understand that we will not allow anyone through to the interview table who does not look appropriate.

In our discussion we will talk about what is appropriate and we will answer all questions truthfully. We welcome your opinions.

Good Morning Fellow job seekers, hope this week gave you some good luck. Mine did, received 2 requests for interviews (the first in 2 months). One I really thought would be good, but have not heard back. They said they will be calling when decision is made. A lot of applicants were there. Need some luck on this one. The second one was for prn work and after looking at numbers it was decided I need full time. They did not offer me the job so far.

I’m ready, but some mock interviewing would never hurt. I’ve had 14 face to face interviews in the past 13 months and 2 telephone interviews. I might take another picture also since mine that I turned in had stuff in the background. I agree that it would be beneficial to know in advance who would be represented at the fair. I received an email back on my application to Parkland Hospital’s Trauma Therapist’s position telling me that my application was being reviewed and I will still receive future communication by a recruiter after they have finished reviewing the packet. I’m hoping that is positive since they never hired anyone for the position that I interviewed for months ago in Mexia and I haven’t heard back from Denton County MHMR. It becomes depressing when you have been out of work this long. In fact HBO has a documentary about that out right now.

I know it has been awhile since I have done a interview person to person, but feel if I am myself and show my qualifications and history that things will go good. I don’t understand why alot of job looking has to be on the interent or why you have to send everything over the interent without having to see someone, sometimes you want to hand them your resume or appliciation. I guess it is easier for them to go through.

Hello all, here are some tips from an article that I came across (“7 Deadly Interview Sins”)
It’s pretty common sense, but a good reminder. I have the entire article and would be happy to send it to anyone that wants it.
The comments about #3 (not being prepared with examples that illustrate why you’d excel at the job)were great because if you claim that you excel at something, but then aren’t able to give specific examples of how you’ve used these skills, interviewers aren’t going to give much credence to your claims. The article suggests that you come to the interview prepared with specific examples from your past that show how you’ve turned your skills into real accomplishments at work.
There was great advice on #5 (asking questions) also.

    7 Deadly Interview Sins
    1. Being late.
    2. Badmouthing a former employer.
    3. Not being prepared with examples that illustrate why you’d excel at the job.
    4. Telling an off-color joke.
    5. Not asking any questions.
    6. Sounding bitter about your job search.
    7. Not being likeable.

    Mr. Threadgill,
We would consider appropriate wear to go as follows:

Men-A plain colored shirt. Polo style, button up, or plain, no graphics. Pressed slacks. Shirts need to be without wrinkles, also.

Women-An appropriate blouse. No graphics, t-shirts or tank tops. Pressed slacks or a skirt with a reasonable length.

    peggylane,
I would be interested in the full article. Melvin, I would also be interested in tips on how to better handle the fact that I left my last full time job due to the work environment being unethical. I felt that if I stayed I could potentially lose my professional license. I tried to work with them as long as I could and asked them to correct things as they came up at first and they didn’t. I have stopped putting “ethical reasons” as my reason for leaving past employment and instead put “do the right thing” and if they question me I further explain it during the interview and try to reframe it in the best light about trying to do the best for the patients. In the 4 months I was there, they never showed me the JCAHCO Manual nor did they provide the resources needed to ensure patient or staff safety. There were numerous injuries and sadly many of them could have been prevented had they increased the staff ratio as recommended. I started with my supervisor, and went up the chain to the risk management officer, the CFO, and the CEO to no avail. I even filed a grievance prior to putting in my resignation. When I apply for county or state jobs, they will always contact your previous two full time jobs no matter whether or not you list them as a reference. That is one problem I am running into regarding obtaining employment. No matter how well the interviews have gone, they aren’t able to hire me when my last full time employer (the one I mentioned above) is black-balling me. Advice anyone (for both future interviews and how to handle this situation as well)?

    Reply
  81. peggylane

Angela, hopefully, you can address it proactively when asked the reason for leaving your last position.
Here are some tips that I came across and I have more detail if you are interested. Let me know how to email you, OK?

Keep It Short – Generally, the more you try to explain, the more difficult your explanation becomes. Be prepared to answer follow-up questions, but only if they are asked.

Keep it Positive – Negative statements about your former boss or organization will only hurt you.

Keep it Truthful – A number of factors result in someone leaving. Pick the reason that is most positive and easiest to explain.

    Angela,
What I would suggest to you is to present the positive.

I would tell my future employer I left to find employment that suited my personality. The atmosphere at my last employer was much different from the way I am. What I see at your place of business is more like the way I do business.

Anything you say negative about past employers makes you look bad. So, that is why I say keep your statements positive.

Most past employers will not say much about you to a future employer for fear of being sued.

Yes, I think I’m ready. I’ve been in the workforce for 40+ years and have been on both sides of the interview table. I’ve learned to be myself, answer questions honestly, & try to project how my skills can fit into the job position/opening. For an interview, I dress casually and try to project a relaxed, confident disposition. I’ve learned that answering questions directly, without rambling, seems to work best.

An additional comment: I know that age isn’t suppose to be a factor unless there’s a particular job spec that requires some specific age range for reasons relating to that job. But, I can’t help but think that many employers have some preconceived “age” stereotypes when hiring. Also, when you’ve had a good paying job and you listing out your ending salary/pay, that may predispose a hiring person to think you wouldn’t be interested in a lower paying job…not so.

When you’ve worked for 1 company for the last 30yrs. and were let go because the “company was moving in a new direction” (ex: getting rid of older, higher paid employees to save a few bucks), how do you put a positive spin on that? I agree with (markskinner),age is not supposed to be a factor but how many companies are going to hire someone who is a year or two away from retirement?

I plan to take some more time practicing interview question answers and use a mirror in the process. I am going to dye my hair because I need to be rid of the gray again — I know it is largely a necessity. I have a relative who has been involved in interviewing and hiring who told me sometimes job candidates who are quite qualified for positions are passed over due to having gray hairs. I will keep my make-up to a minimum. Basic black clothing contributes to a professional look and is slenderizing. Melvin reminded some of the job searchers that it is good to use eye drops if you can detect red. Now it us time to follow through 🙂

I agree that looking professional is very important when interviewing for a job. I am definately ready for this showcase. I usually go with a nice suit. It’s also important to not overdue your look. Try to stick with looking natural and don’t wear too much make up or jewelry. Things that are too flashy can make or break you.

I changed the reason for leaving to seeking a position better suited to my personality (or something to that effect) and while I am still seeking something with more full time hours, I have just been offered a job with a local psychologist working around 28 hours a week with some benefits, which is what I truly needed! I am excited. I am putting in a notice this Thursday after I sign papers at the psychologist’s office here in town. I’ll check in again on Wednesday.

    Congratulations! That’s terrific news!

I’m excited to report that I have an interview tomorrow morning at 9!!! Fingers crossed, this position is so close I could WALK TO WORK. Considering that I have been applying in places like Stephenville and Cleburne, that’s practically a miracle. Will let y’all know how it goes.

That is a tough one. It pretty much sums up my company as well: I was given a positive review, a raise, a nice bonus, and a pink slip all in the same meeting. One by one everyone 55 and over at that company is being let go. What are you gonna do?

I say all you can do is emphasize the positive. You learned a lot at that company, you probably took them in a few “new directions” yourself… all you need to do is figure out how to explain succinctly all the good you did the company during your time there.

Physically – ready; mentally – ready; spiritually – ready; the triangle of life is – ready. Like some of the other participants have noted, I to would like to have availability to the people/companies we may meet, in order to learn more about them, what they are looking for, how I can present/sell myself to them.
