Discussion 22: UI Benefits and More

Job Club Heart of Texas, Job Search | 77 comments

Below you will find a notice from the Texas Workforce Commission. This notice is to inform you of the latest information available on UI benefits. Please read it carefully. If you have any questions, just ask! Here’s the link: https://campusjobxpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/TWC-EXTENDED-BENEFITS.pdf

We have UI Specialists monitoring the Job Club. They will research your questions and will post the official answer from the Texas Workforce Commission. They will also give you the website and online location to find your own answers. The Workforce Center and the CampusJobXpress Staff understand what is happening to your benefits and will assist you in any way possible.

We have a Job Fair December 13th from 10am to 2pm at the Waco Heart of Texas Workforce Center at 1416 South New Road. Plans are to keep this employment effort going through the month of January.

In February, there are plans for another larger Job Fair. It is important for you to update your resume. Even though you may have had your resume done by someone you rely upon, please allow us to review it. We are also encouraging everyone who feels they would be a good candidate for the video resume, to please send us an email so that we may make an appointment for you to accomplish this.

If you have questions, ask now so that we can work on giving you the proper answers. If you have been performing job searches and have not found that that job is for you, then, please post those jobs for others to review.

We have a Resume Class Tuesday through Thursday at 9:00 am and at 10:30am. Computer Classes are available at 2:00pm on Tuesdays, Microsoft Word Classes on Wednesdays at 2:00pm and on Thursdays, we have an Excel Class, also at 2:00pm.

So, in conclusion for this discussion, give us your UI questions, your Job Fair questions and let us know of any employer you would like for us to invite to future job fairs. Thank you very much!

I would love to come to the job fair, is it by invitation only? Also, I recently had to file a extension for my UI benefit’s and was told they would expire after this month, even though I have not drawn the limit. Why are they expiring after this month, I was told everyone’s is.

Good Morning job seekers. This is from Jann Page. I filed for an extension on 12-6-12 and received notice of continued benefits thru Dec.2012. When I called the listed phone number I was given the information that after Dec no benefits would be available. I know it has something to do with the current goverment issues and the federal cuts. I feel cheated because I had worked for the same employer for 16 years. However I understand it is in the hands of the goverment and we have to just wait and see. WHAT A BUMMER!!!!

    Good morning fellow job seekers!

Yes Jann, the future of any additional UI benefits after December 29, 2012, is in the hands of the disfunctional government in place in Washington D.C.. We can only pray that reason will creep in, somehow and things will be resolved, very soon.

    Have a blessed day, everyone.

    Hi Sheila Parrish here,
I also had to apply for emergency benefits but was told that it is really only until Dec 2012. So what happens if the government does reach a decision and say that the decision is positive or good, Will our benefits continue or do we have to re-apply?
    Thank you

Sheila, I was told that even if the requested payment is denied to continue requesting every 2 weeks just like we have been doing. Then if something changes (to our benefit) our claim is still active and TWC will look back at the times we requested payment and go from there. I could have a misunderstaning of this issue, just will wait and see. All we can do.(from jann page)

Good morning everyone, Susan Wade here. I, too, am receiving the extended federal UI benefits. Should we keep requesting payments after the end of the year? Are the benefits different for different parts of the country? I seem to recall people in the northeast receiving these benefits for longer periods of time, but that may have just been the press reporting erroneous information.

    Reply
  15. Michael Dutton

The confusing part of the Tier II is that the normal request benefit date is 12/16/12 in order to get benefits from the two work weeks prior. I can understand that this reporting and payment would go through just fine.

The problem comes in for the following two work weeks covering 12/16/12 to 12/22/12 (work week 1)& 12/23/12 to 12/29/12 (work week 2). Normally the benefit request date would be 12/30/12.

Will the system let you make a benefit claim for just work week 1 and allow you to request benefits on 12/22/12?

Should we continue to request benefits on the normal schedule in case congress extends the benefits at the last moment?

I received a letter that I must attend a mandatory meeting at workforce center, and yet I have done everthing that’s been asked of me. I’ve done my work searches and posted comments on jobclub. But, now it’s getting hard as I am trying to apply by the net, through the use of a PS3, as my PC is down. Worst of all I just had an accident and broke both heels of my feet, so now I am immobile for at least 2-3 weeks or until my doctor decides if surgery is needed on both feet. I’m not complaining, things could have been worse; and tragedy comes new found wisedom and appreciation of what you already have .

Good Morning, this is Carolyn Walter. I too am on extended benefits, all we can hope for is our Government to wake up and see what shape this country is really in. Either I haven’t received the notices mentioned or I overlooked it in what I have received. Nevertheless, benefits needs to be extended.
I have heard that Owens Illinois Glass Plant is looking for a Shift Supervisor, I think they have it listed on Monsterjobs.com
Also, a friend was telling me that ARAMARK SCM at Baylor University is looking for a Marketing Coordinator. This requires a marketing degree to apply. I failed to ask how to apply since it was not in my field.

karrypatterson- I noticed a listing for RN in Sundays paper but not sure where it was. Maybe you can go online and research this.

I did not receive an invitation to attend, but the workintexas page notified me that the fair was taking place and employers in my field may be attending. From what Rachel has posted there will not be workers from my field attending. It is not feasible for me to miss a day of work (wages) to attend the fair if no one from my field is in attendance. If there were people there from my field, it would potentially be worth it. I do not accrue any sick, vacation, or holiday pay so if I miss, I just miss. I just received a letter in the mail letting me know I could be eligible for an extension of my benefits if I am still working part time. I sent it back in since I am still only working 25-28 hours a week. I inquired about working at TJJD in Mart and the person in charge of the psychology department was out of the country for a month and a half just returned a little over a week ago. She told me she had not forgotten about me and spoke with her superintendent and human resource director to see if they could work with a flexible work schedule (non traditional 40-hour work week). They are fine with it, but want to clear it with their Central Office before having me go through the trouble of doing the full application and all. I’ve worked with the agency when it was called TYC for almost 10 years before so they know my work history. I’m praying this will work out as it would be a job with benefits and my Cobra insurance expires at the end of January.

Thanks for the link to the info on the rules regarding EUC. I really didn’t understand how that worked, so that link really helped.
I realize that the EUC will help a lot of individuals who have been unable to find fulltime employment. However, I am so disgusted with the federal spending situation. If they don’t stop spending, spending, we’re headed for a bottomless pit that the US won’t ever be able to climb out of. These aren’t words of optimism, just realism.

I want to make an appointment for someone to review my resume and give me some feedback for how to improve it. I see have classes Tuesday through Thursday at 9:00 am and at 10:30am. Do I need to make a reservation for that? Or do I meet with someone to review what I have?

Also, I would like an update on Excel. Do I need to reserve a spot for that? Or is is a 1st come 1st serve?

Good Morning job seekers. I’ve been sick (flu, I’m still very sick) all week and I could not attend the last job fair. But I’m ready to attend the next job fair. I think itis a great opportunity to meet with employers that I might not be able to access any other way.
I found the next helpful tips for Attending a Job Fair:

•Dress for Success. Attend the job fair dressed for success in professional interview attire, and carry a portfolio. However, do wear comfortable shoes, because you will be standing in line.
•Practice a Pitch. Practice a quick pitch summarizing your skills and experience so you’re ready to promote your candidacy to prospective employers.
•Bring Supplies. Bring extra copies of your resume, pens, a notepad, and business cards with your name, your email address, and cell phone number.
•Check Out Companies. Many job fairs and career expos have information on participating companies on the job fair web site. Be prepared to talk to hiring managers by checking out the company’s web site, mission, open positions, and general information before you go.
•Arrive Early. Keep in mind that lines can be long, so arrive early – before the fair officially opens.
•Attend a Workshop. If the job fair has workshops or seminars, attend them. In addition to getting job search advice, you’ll have more opportunities to network.
•Network. While you are waiting in line, talk to others. You never know who might be able to help with your job search.
•Show Initiative. Shake hands and introduce yourself to recruiters when you reach the table. Demonstrate your interest in the company and their job opportunities.
•Be Enthusiastic. Employer surveys identify one of the most important personal attributes candidates can bring to a new position as enthusiasm. This means that employers want to see you smile!
•Ask Questions. Have some questions ready for the company representatives. The more you engage them, the better impression you’ll make.
•Collect Business Cards. Collect business cards, so you have the contact information for the people you have spoken with.
•Take Notes. It’s hard to keep track when you’re meeting with multiple employers in a busy environment. Jot down notes on the back of the business cards you have collected or on your notepad, so you have a reminder of who you spoke to about what.
•Say Thank You. Take the time to send a brief follow up thank you note or email to the company representatives you met at the job fair. It’s a good way to reiterate your interest in the company and to remind company representatives that you’re a strong candidate

I’m sorry, one more question. Susan Wade here. In applying for payment this week, there was a notice that this would be my last payment request for the year as benefits end 12-29-12. What about these next 2 weeks, which will be completed on 12-29-12, but not scheduled to be requested until 12-30-12? Didn’t we qualify for these benefits and now can’t request them as the date of request is not until a day later than the benefit year? That doesn’t seem right.
