Discussion 41: Dress to Impress

Job Club Heart of Texas | 24 comments

This week, we would like to touch on a few important points that have come to our attention.

After receiving over 100 resumes in less than 10 days, we are seeing some troublesome issues –objectives, grammar, structure and more. A resume is a major key to success. Therefore, it must give the best impression to produce the best results. Have you had your resume reviewed lately? If so, who checked it?
With impressions on our minds, we need to look toward the image we present when applying or interviewing for a job. Yesterday, we observed how a person was dressed after having gone to an interview. What they chose to wear was not appropriate for the type of job they were applying for. When you go to an interview, you should be dressed for the type of job you’re applying for, but always with a touch of professionalism. Examples include:
Executive position = Suit and Tie
Sales/Clerical position = Slacks and Dress Shirt
Warehouse/Production position = Dress khakis and Dress Shirt
Food Service/Labor = Dress Khakis and Dress Shirt
Do you have any questions about the proper attire for a job that you’re applying for?
Dressing for success is always important, but character of a person will always be the up most important feature of any human being. We have watched many tragedies fall upon our country lately, most recently, right here at home. In times like these, we must support our neighbors, loved ones and heroes. We are all joined by one basic similarity… we are human. We are friends and family. Consider what you can do for your neighbor and lend a helping hand, because one good deed leads to another. Please take time out of your busy day today to express a moment of silence and send positive thoughts to those affected by these tragedies.

Proper dress if very important and makes an impressionable statement. It is sad that in this day a Resume makes the first impression with employers. You can put anything on paper, but honesty is seen thru the eyes of a person.

My thoughts and prayers have been and will continue to be with all those affected by the tragedies of the past few weeks. I fear there are more to come.

Prayers for those facing difficult times, unanswered applications and self-doubt. I keep telling myself it’s the economy…

I have spruced up my resume, but haven’t been able to attach to Job Club because of the document compatibility.
My sister-in-law has a background in Human Resources and she checked it for me. As soon as I can get to another computer I can post it here.
    Thanks,

My resume has been critiqued and proof read by a college professor, a human resources director and others in the educational community. I really believe that my resume targets my abilities and experience as an educator. I agree that its important to dress the appropriately for the position applied for. Another important thought is a haircut and shined boots.

    God Bless

Hello, this is Chuck. Good point, whether a job interview, or job fair, even everyday try to “dress”, and groom for results. May meet someone in day to day contacts, and want to make good first impression. Good Thoughts.Must be ready, have seen some show up at “job fairs” in jeans, and no pens to fill out information.

I always believe that the first impression is everything. If you dress properly it conveys that you will also take care/pride in your work. If you look sloppy, what would make an employer think that you would take pride in your work if you can’t take pride in your appearance.

    Thanks

I do believe that first impressions can be ones that make or break an interview. It is always good to be well prepared for each opportunity, we never know what connection could lead us to our next position.

Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with families all over our nation today who are grieving the death of a loved one.

Agreed, first impressions always matter. The importance of how one dresses at an interview can do the trick. When one does dress nicely it shows the prospective employer you care. Also, good grammar & spelling on a resume are fundamental & should always be checked. Thanks for the review. Jeffrey Gregoire

Yes, dressing the part for all occasions is important. You never know if that potential employer was out shopping and noticed you at the store in your pj’s.

I think you should always dress appropriately for a job interview no matter what the job is. First impressions are lasting impressions. We need to come together as a community and support our neighbors in West. They need our prayers also.

The way one chooses to present themselves @ an interview is very important. Neat and well groomed, nothing too flashy or revealing, just use conservative values as a guide here. Resume review/critique is also very important. I have asked for critique from english teachers, job placement counselors and others whose opinion i respect for input on specific ways to improve my resume. I continue to fine tune my resume as needed for maximum effect in pursuing the specific position or company i am interested in.

Food for thought…You only get one chance to make a first impression.

One tip I’ve heard about dressing for an interview is not to wear black, anybody else heard the same?

The events of late have served as a reminder of how fragile life is. My thoughts and prayers are with those who have been effected.

I’m happy to report that I’ve accepted a job and will begin work on Monday of next week. Thanks to TWC for offering the Microsoft Word & Excel classes.

Best of luck to you all!

I usually dress appropriately for interviews. I volunteered counseling hours for the victims of West, but I guess there was such an outpouring of support they have not yet needed me.

I am well aware of the first impression being the only impression to obtain a job. Although my clothes may not exactly match what is expected I dress and nice and professionalas possible.

My resume has been checked by the counsleors at this sight and TWC. It has been updated.

I would like to know how and where to post my resume to me had your website. I thought itwas posted but, now, I’m not sure.

Unfortunately my family has experienced first hand the recent West tragedy. My son is a police officer there and he and my daughter-in-law continue to work tirelessly at the protection and orgainzation of rebuilding. Prayers every night and day are sent to the Lord for their strength.
