Discussion 12: UI Benefits and Other Announcements

Job Club Heart of Texas, Job Search | 109 comments

Please be patient as the corresponding video will be up later today. Thank you!

Hello, this is Sheena.

Today we have three new things to discuss: the Extended Unemployment Benefits, our last job event and the new contractor  for the Heart Of Texas Workforce Centers in this area.

First, our major announcement is the management of the workforce center has change and the new contractor will be adding new services whichshould help you with your job search.

Under discussion is more help with resumes, adding classes  for computer, Word, excel and powerpoint, email basics and more detail instructions on the use of Work In Texas.

We will also have more job events as our business services team is expanding its services. More to come as we get more information….

Second the last employment showcase.

Please be mindful that if you commit to an interview you should keep that appointment. Not showing up for a scheduled appointment is problematic for the employer and It reflexes poorly on you. Next time let staff know if you cannot keep your appointment.

Last, with all the discussions about UI Benefits we have attached a detail explaination from the Texas Workforce Commission posted on their website.

If you have any further questions after reading this, please ask us so we may attempt to get you an answer.

Thank you se you next week

My internet is still down unknown to when they will have it back up and running. last week I went to Waco workforce. This week I am at a public library here in Valley Mills using their computers. This works out so I do not have to make the long drive to Waco. Anyways I sent off a resume for a State job in Mexia. Hopefully will here something from them.

Good morning everyone. Heart of Texas Goodwill Ind. are doing classes for free. I just finished taking an excel class and it was great. Tiffany, that teaches the class is very good and doesn’t rush thru. She is great for someone like me that has not been in school for a long time. It’s a four week class, two days a week at two hours each class. It starts back up next week on Oct. 9th from 5:30 to 7:30 on Tuesdays and Thursday’s. This month it is a evening class, where I took it during the day last month. I will start next week for the Word class, which will be a day class from 1:00 to 3:00 on Monday’s and Wednesday’s. Ya’ll should check it out. Best part, it’s FREE !
Still putting in applications and hoping for the best.

I am interested in the computer classes.

I had a “skills assessment” yesterday, it was a 3 hr test on two different programs. I don’t feel like I did too well; one program was a newer version than I have ever used, and the other program I don’t know hardly at all. We’ll see. I was happy to at least get a call.

Good luck everyone that has had interviews! Good luck Michael, hope you get the job!

I had some on the job training in computers and a basic class years ago at MCC, but still feel pretty inadequate. Every job description now includes some knowledge of programs. It would be nice to qualify by saying I know those programs. Good news about extended benefits too. I never thought I’d be in this position at my stage of life. Very interesting graphic on Unemployment Insurance. First bubble says it. “Paid by Employer Taxes.” The employer never pays taxes. Taxes are paid by the employer FOR YOU. It is all calculated as the amount the employer must pay to employ you. Therefore; it is actually part of your hidden salary. It is exactly the same for SSN. You pay half and employer pays half…not really. The half “paid by the employer” is calculated into what it cost to employ you. So the part the employer is paying is just being paid FOR YOU. It is just hidden from you by law. It is the same with UI. It is the hidden part of your salary and is just being paid by the employer FOR YOU.

Okay, I will get off my soap box now.

I most certainly agree, It is a bad reflection on you to not show up for a job interview, It makes a statement about how reliable you would be to show up for work ?

But what about a employer that doesnt show up , or return phone calls after the interview ?
Makes you wounder about how loyal is the employer to its employees ?

    Times are rough for everyone.

Enjoyed going to the job fair on Thursday. I talked to several companies and felt comfortable that they don’t seem to be turned off by older jobsearchers. I attend the computer class at Goodwill Industries. I took the Excel2007(twice) and Word2007 this Spring (48 hours in all). I enjoyed Tiffiny, the instructor. She is so calm and encouraging. Not trying to knock on the new folks coming in, but if you can’t come to the Workforce classes, Goodwill has computer classes at night. I will probably go for some updates. Thanks for the info on benefits, but I really don’t understand how it works. Good luck everyone on your job searches.

I’ll double check their name tomorrow as I’ll be passing through there tomorrow. It the information is incorrect, I’ll come back on here and repost. it looks as though the position would require a CDL (semi-trucks). I remember a while back there were a few on here who qualified for that.

Hey guys, I’m going through a lot of Work in Texas profiles, and a lot of you are inactive. Do yourselves a large favor and sign on to verify your information as the state frowns on incomplete profiles. At the very least verify your addresses. When your account is active it lets the Unemployment Department know that you’re looking for a job. When it remains inactive for a certain amount of days it red flags them and goes in-active.

I went to the Burlington Coat Factory interview. The first went well and was praised by the manager. The second interview went well according to the Store manager. I was to complete the paper work sent to me through email. I never received the email or another call from them. I put all my effort in the Burlington ob offer and lost the Panera Bread opening. I learned an important lesson take what comes to you first.
