Discussion 17: Getting Your Job Search Togther

Job Club Heart of Texas, Job Search, Octobe r2012 Magazine | 113 comments

Hello, this is Melvin. Sorry I have been away for a while but I wanted to re-connect with all of you. I have a lot of things I need to discuss with you very quickly.

A lot of you got an email. Many of you have been responding to job club, but because some of you had not, we sent out an email to everyone because it was very important that you know we are now recording everyone who comes into the job club. We are automatically putting that into the system so that when you report it from your side as part of your contact information, it is already there and it has been verified. So it only helps you in what we are doing as far as this reporting. You will be getting other emails from us because we are also working on getting everyoneʼs resumes up to date.

Iʼve been monitoring while I was gone, your responses to employers not recalling you back, not really having a lot of activities as far as job responses. We are reading those and we understand what is going on and we are now taking action to get something done. I said it in class and Iʼll say it again, “If you are not getting interviews, there is something wrong with your resume.” That being said, now we have to correct your resumes. You may like your resume. You may think your resume looks good but it is not what you think. It is actually what the employer thinks.

So if we are going to get you to that next job, we need to do your resume. I have asked the staff to contact you as quickly as possible to start bringing you in to re-evaluate your resumes. If you would like, we would like you to start on this coming Tuesday. Send us an email, make a reservation, we can take 14 people at a time. We are starting at 9 oʼclock and will go until 12. We are very serious about this issue with the resume.

Also, we are working very quickly to try to see if we can put together a very good, effective job fair for everyone. We are going to try to do it in early December if we can get enough employers to cooperate because it ʼs the holiday season, it may become an issue but it is not going to be for a lack of trying on our part so we will be doing that for you.

So I wanted you also to be aware that on November 15th at the Waco Convention Center, there will be a Veteranʼs Job Fair that the State has asked a lot of workforce agencies across the State to do. That will start at 10 oʼclock and will run until 2 oʼclock. For those of you who are not veterans, I am going to ask you, if you would like, if may be very helpful for you to drop by around 11:30 on to that particular job fair.

We are going to give preference to the veterans up until 11:30, but if you feel like dropping in and seeing whatʼs there, I think it will be an okay idea. So think about doing that, drop in and see if you can make some kind of connection, okay? We will be calling you, you will be getting emails, you will be getting personal contacts from us — if you are getting those, then, itʼs not a personal thing. We are not picking on you. And for those of you who have sent emails in saying that someone is turning you into the State, it is not our responsibility to turn you into the State at this particular time. The State has not asked and we have not seen reason to do that, so if you are getting emails or getting letters from the State, it is not by any action that is being done here. The State has another system that they work through so that, in itself, may be why you are getting that. We will always let you know before we send anything. You will get some type of notice that you are not responding, you are not cooperating, or you are not doing something. Once you get three of those, then, we would probably say okay, we donʼt have a choice. If you are responding, if you are doing everything you are supposed to and if you get an email from us or a letter, donʼt take it personal. Itʼs just easier to send out an email to everyone than to try to screen through 1200 people about job club or about work activities, okay?

So, we will be working very hard for you. We will do everything we can to get you employed as quickly as we possibly can. I want you to keep up your spirits. I want you to think positively because if you go down, as far as your spirits are concerned, itʼs only going to hurt you when you do your job search, all right? I do appreciate it. Good luck. Let us hear from you and you will certainly be hearing from us. Thank you.Bye.

Thanks for doing all that ya’ll do. All of it is not your responabliity, we have to play a important role in our life to get a job. We need to do what it takes to get noticed either with our resume or in an interview and we do have the resources to do that and it is free. I feel we all are ready to get a job and just need to take that extra step-help to get us back in the workforce.

Thank you for the information. I’m praying that with the elections over, the economy can pick up. I’m doubtful, but optimistic. As for my resume, I had help with one of your employees at the session I had already gone to, does that mean I will be required to attend another one?

I have read that Bell County is in desperate need of 911 Operators if that is of interest to anyone. Not sure who to contact but I’m sure someone at TWC can help.

Hope everyone has a good day.

Ok. From my perspective, working on the resume might help, but I honestly think that my personal situation, as is true with many others, is actually a hindrence in obtaining a job position. I’m talking about the older available workers who have some years of work experience, have developed a work strong work ethic, and are just “too” qualified. Where I used to work, they would often times tell someone they were overqualified for a job…that would get all over me. But, I’ve come to think it’s true. For people who have had success in their work careers and are looking for a 2nd chance to do something meaningful, the use of past work experiences and positions held has become a negative for trying to start a career in a new field. I know that sounds a bit like an excuse, but that’s where I am right now. However, I’ll still keep plugging away and am willing to try new approaches because what I’m doing now sure isn’t working. I was so hopeful for a different result from the election to possibly stir up the job market, but it looks like we’re gonna have more of the same.

    Thanks for the information.

I have noticed in the last couple of weeks a marked uptick in the number of openings in my field. Of course I’m applying to them all and I’m very hopeful. Fall has definitely always been the “hiring season” in my career history and I hope this proves the case this year.

Mark, I know what you mean as I also have over 30 years experience; and to make matters worse I had a 15 year “mommy track” of part time work right in the middle of it. Wishing you the best of luck.

Melvin – I have gotten three letters from the state reminding me that a minimum of 3 job search activities are required. Why are they sending me those? Any ideas?

I have not had a problem getting interviews and, in my opinion, the interviews go well also. Although it can’t be mentioned, age I’m sure, plays the biggest part in not hearing back.
I do look forward to the veterans job fair. Those that want to hire veterans seem less likely to let age be a factor.

I appreciate you explaining that to everyone though. If anyone knows of any LPC type jobs. I could use something with benefits. I think my resume is o.k. – Rachel looked over it some time back, but I am willing to have it reviewed again. Though I don’t see how you can change a resume (past jobs) when you have had one job for the last 30 yrs.

I am certainly interested in the job fair and plan to attend all.

I was in upper management for many years but I can do many other things and would like to get out of management and into the maintenance/technician field as a 2nd chance.

I am posting this again because I feel that people need to be aware of this:

All recipients of Extended UI Benefits: In order to be “counted” as logged in to the Work In Texas website you MUST click on and apply for jobs that are listed under the “Match Jobs Now” tab. If no jobs are listed, you must modify/change your profile to add/delete or go to the “Job Match Advisor” tab to change work location/pay/shift, etc. Applying for jobs by location/occupation/shift does not count you as being logged in the system.
This information was given to me by a TWC counselor.

I uploaded my resume, but did not receive any feedback, so I assumed that it was okay. How do I know if my resume needs work, if I haven’t heard from anyone? Should I assume that not getting feedback means that its okay? I have worked for 16 years for one employer, so I find that past job information can be somewhat blurry. I do try to answer all questions concerning pass jobs, as best as I can (can remember, that is). Thanks for the job fair information for this month. Thank you for the information. It was very helpful. I was not aware that it was MANDATORY that we participate in this discussion every week in order to be considered “actively looking for work”. I put more than my three applications every week and I get no responses from employers or actually I have received a couple of “no thank you” emails from some. With my 8th grade education and never having held a job for longer than a year, this is no surprise to me. So while receiving unemployment, I have recently (Nov.5&6) just gone to take my GED test and I am waiting for the results. I am also getting registered to go to MCC this Spring which classes begin in January. I am still looking for work because going to school would not stop me from working. After being primarily supported by a spouse all my life, since the age of 18, I have finally realized I am getting no where in life and I am trying really hard to make things better for myself and my children, one small step at a time.

    Thanks,

    Melvin,
I have submitted applications to so many jobs. I have had interview based upon my resumes and qualifications. I usually get no further than the second interview. I know my interview are on the money. Afterwards the Manager tells me I did a fantastic job. The biggest company that is giving me this problem is Best Buy, toys r us, and HEB. They will advertise on Indeed.com that they have certain position open. Based on my qualifications I then apply to the positions. I never get an interview at HEB a week later. I get an email telling me that they have decided to pursue other candidates. Then a few days later the same position comes open again. Toys r us does the same thing, I just don’t understand. Best Buy just flat out leaves you hanging. When you call to follow up, they cant give you any information or you get some other dumb reason. I just don’t know what to do. I’m trying to take care of my family and its getting really hard. I’m on the verge of giving up soon.

    Melvin,
I really appreciate any help, it is much appreciated. I may have to move away from my family as a result of being unemployed. Auto Tech Trainee and Asset Protection are the most recent that I applied to at Best Buy. Toy’s r us Off Hours Stocker and Receiving Associate are the most recent. Finally HEB was Food Prep Associate and Cashier. I would be interested in what the have to say please let me know.

    Sincerely,
    Bill Knox

    Melvin,
I also wanted to let you and Rachel know. About a week ago TWC was hosting opening for the HWY 6 Jail for Correctional Officers. I came out to the Work Force and printed the Mclennan County Job Application. Then Faxed it to Mr. Henry at the Mclennan Count Human Resources. I followed up a few days later and still no response. Again I don’t know what to do. Like I said it may come down to me having to leave my family and Waco, Texas. Further more I’m on Emergency Unemployment Benefits and they are a few weeks from being completely exhausted. I guess its going to take me losing everything before someone will help me.

I still have not found a job after almost a year of unemployment. My Unemployment is about to permanently expire. I don’t have any other options but to hope somebody will hire me asap. I have had very little help, despite my efforts to find a job. What’s a person to do, I’m really about to give up.

Mr. Knox, I will review your resume and then determine if you match the cashiers job. If you do, you will recieve a referral card through email in which you will show to the employer that you match to at the event. Their name will be written on the card, but we do not give out attending employers names to anyone before the event or before you are matched.

I went to the Aldi job fair at the Hampton Inn. I was first instructed to go to TWC to complete an application for Aldi. Then bring a resume and dress well to be interviewed on the spot. I walk in and the aldi associate tells me to read the job description. Then she ask have you filled out an application. I respond yes man, and that I’ve done sales along with customers service for 15 years plus. She then says ok if we pick you application we will call you for an interview today. I walk out with my jaw wide open, heading home ready to give up.

I have tried up until now to find a job. Rachel is angry with me because I couldn’t complete the secrect shopper job. I had lost my electricity and my mom was very ill. She or mrs williams will not respond to my emails. I applied for the Aldi Casier job. I went to the Hampton Inn on dec 19. Then was told if the like my resume they would call me for an interview. I never herd from them again. I’m giving up on people helping me. Rachel was suppose to have the people look into why. I’m not getting any job results. My resume is fine I’m know because MRs williams told me a while back. I will do this on my own from now on.

I’m still trying the job search, even though I get very discouraged. I’m about to lose my Emergency Unemployment benefits. I’m slowly sinking into a pit of dispair. My options are getting very few and little. I applied for the Behlen Manufacturing Position today. Please keep your fingers crossed everyone.

Bill I understand exactly how you feel. I am getting very depressed and discouraged also. I will be moving in the near future to see if that changes anything. One of these days something will happen as long as I don’t starve to death first. I do not fill the bill of any of the Obama help. to old to have under aged children, and am not the right color. All they want to offer is 10.00 worth of food stamps and I don’t know about you but what the heck can you buy for 10.00 to last you a month of survival. Sorry if this sounds racial but it is the truth.

I’m done wasting my time here. Im going to do this on my own. I have gotten very little help, most of the people have bad attitudes. My unemployment is now completely exhausted. I’m even a gulf war veteran, if I Inés that I would be treated this way. I would have never moved to texas.
