Discussion 24: New Job Resolutions

Job Club Heart of Texas, Job Search | 64 comments

Hello, our discussion is late this week due to the holidays, don’t worry participation will be counted as normal!

New Year’s resolution is a commitment that a person makes to one or more personal goals, projects, or the reforming of a habit. A key element to a New Year’s Resolution that sets it apart from other resolutions is that it is made in anticipation of the New Year and new beginnings. People committing themselves to a New Year’s resolution generally plan to do so for the whole following year. This lifestyle change is generally interpreted as advantageous.

It is not enough to say “I want a new job.” It is important to look within yourself and see what it is that you need to change about yourself to get that new job. Maybe you slouch during interviews. Maybe you  need to update your resume. All of these things are important. It is mandatory that you take a deep breath look in the job mirror, and identify the things within yourself that you can change to make your job search fruitful. It could be something as simple as changing your outlook on how you search for a job, how you apply for your job, or what type of job you’re looking for. Are your standards too low or too high? The leading cause of resolutions is failure is that the expectations for the goal are unrealistic.

From 1 to 10 tell us what your work resolutions are! Happy New Years from CampusJobXpress!

– -NOTICE- –

TWC mails you a letter showing the maximum amount of EUC you could receive for each Tier. Per federal law, the program allowing payment of EUC benefits expires on December 28, 2013.
 Based on the maximum amount of EUC you could receive for each Tier, your benefits may run out before the EUC program expires.
If you have benefits remaining on your EUC claim after the program expires, TWC cannot pay those funds to you because the EUC program will be over.
EUC Eligibility and Deadlines
Tier 1: Must exhaust regular benefits by December 21, 2013, and Tier 1 claim must begin by December 22, 2013. TWC determines your eligibility for the extension after you complete and return the EUC application.
Tier 2: Must exhaust the prior Tier by December 21, 2013. Per federal law, the program allowing payment of EUC benefits expires on December 28, 2013. If you have benefits remaining on your EUC claim after the program expires, TWC cannot pay those funds to you. Other eligibility requirements:
 You must be able and available for full-time work.
 You must be unemployed or working reduced hours.
 Your base period wages must equal or exceed 40 times your weekly benefit amount. (If your regular claim pays 26 weeks of benefits, you meet this qualification.)
 You must have exhausted your regular benefits on your most recent claim, or the claim year must be expired.
 Your regular claim must have been filed on or after May 7, 2006.  You cannot be eligible for unemployment benefits on a new regular claim* in Texas, in any other state, or Canada.
* Note: if you are eligible for a new regular claim that pays less than your EUC claim, you may be able to continue receiving EUC.
Work Search and Availability Requirements
If you are required to look for work, your work search and availability requirements increase while you are receiving EUC.
You are required to participate in special reemployment assessment activities with the Workforce Solutions office, unless you have attended similar services within the last three months.
You are required to seek and accept work you are capable of performing.
      You may be required to submit your worksearchlog.
Possibility of Further Extensions
TWC notifies you by mail if you qualify for another extension, so make sure we have your correct address. To verify or change the address TWC has on our records, log on to Unemployment Benefits Services, select Contact Information from the Change My Profile menu, and follow instructions.
You cannot apply for a benefit extension before exhausting your current balance because you must exhaust each level (Tier) of benefits before applying for an extension.
Congress can enact legislation to create further extensions at any time. TWC will notify you by mail if another extension occurs after you exhaust your benefits and you are potentially eligible for the extension. Make sure we have your correct address on our records.

Carolyn Walter here. I don’t make New Year’s resolutions. I feel that goals are to be made when one realizes there is room for change, whether that be on January 1st or July 1st. It’s more realistic to set goals as you need them pertaining to the area of improvement than to make goals for the sake of making them on New Years.
I have a daily goal: Do the best I can in whatever I do, then I can look in the mirror at the end of the day and be proud of myself.
Hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday.

As a matter of personal health that I believe could successfully impact a potential job, I have been working on losing weight (and would like to attend the gym when it is okay for my health-blood pressure issues). I resolve to be more creative in my approach to my job search (looking outside the box, even my career field if need be in order to have a better job with benefits while I complete school), believe in my clinical abilities more (my practicum site supervisor has helped tremendously with this during this semester), and believe that no matter how long it may take–I WILL find a full time job again!.

Happy hunting and Happy New Year everyone. Please be safe, I was dodging a tornado during Christmas, thankfully safe and sound!

    Good day all,
Well I might have a job finally…. But I had to apply for a job that pays really low. I am talking single digit hourly pay… But at this point I’ll take what I can get good news tho its only 17 miles from my house and it is Mon- Fri. 8 hrs a day. So we will see if they call me to come in… Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and got to see their family during the holidays. Now if we can get through the new year. Good Luck all

I read the next article :
When considering resolutions for 2013, try starting with these:
    1. Stop procrastinating. Across the board—stop putting things off. Start with the small things. You’ll be amazed at how much simpler and more fluid your life becomes. Procrastination is a thief of time. You can’t build a life on what you’re “going to do.”

    2. Join a new group. A large network is the key to career success and the way to build a large network is to be constantly meeting new people. So this year, join your trade or professional association, sign up for Toastmasters, volunteer for your church choir, or get involved in your local government or your favorite charity. It doesn’t matter what group you join. Just join one.

    3. Learn a new skill. Not only will brushing up on your expertise do wonders for your job security—or, if you’re looking for a job, your employability—it’s also a great mental boost. Our minds are happiest when they are growing.

    4. Set a goal. This is different from putting together a comprehensive long-range life or career plan. That’s difficult, and many of us never even get started. Instead, simply identify one single goal and then work toward it. Doesn’t that seem much more doable?

    5. Read. Specifically, read about your business or industry. Seek an “outsider” view if possible. The more you know about your field, the more interesting it will become to you, and the more valuable you are as a contributor. A simple Google search will get you started.

    6. Get a mentor. We all need someone to make suggestions, give advice, listen to our ideas and fears, tell us when we’ve gone off track, and give us a kick in the behind when we need it. In fact, you may want to have more than one mentor.

    7. Save money. Nothing is more important to your security and future than having money set aside. If you’re already saving, save a bit more. If you’re not saving at all, start today. Seriously. Don’t even wait for January 1st. Start saving now.

    8. Improve your people skills. All jobs involve working with people. No matter how amazing you are at your job, if you can’t get along with others, you will have real problems succeeding. So this year, vow to listen a little more, talk a little less, and give your colleagues, bosses, customers, and clients the benefit of the doubt.

    9. Volunteer for something. Want to instantly feel better about yourself and your life? Give some of your time and energy away. Whether you’re organizing the blood drive at your workplace or cleaning up the local park, volunteering is good for you, personally and professionally.

    10. Share these resolutions with someone. Like your mentors. A colleague or family member will work, too. Making yourself accountable for your resolutions exponentially increases the likelihood you’ll keep them.

    Happy New Year.

I am looking forward to a fresh start with the new year. I believe companies are starting to hire again. I know in my field I have had more openings to put in for than earlier in my search. Sadly, none of them have been here in Waco but I am willing to live a couple hours away, like Dallas/Ft Worth, Bryan/College Station or Austin and commute home on weekends. I know my job is out there.

I am working my network systematically and trying to have a “business” lunch each week with former colleagues to keep communication lines open. I have been working on my health and weight and have lost 22 lbs so far. I have a way to go to get to my ideal weight but this is a great start for me. I have more energy than I did before and a new bounce in my step.

I wish everyone a happy and safe new year!

claim pays 26 weeks of benefits, you meet this qualification.)  You must have exhausted your regular benefits on your most recent claim, or the claim year must be
expired.  Your regular claim must have been filed on or after May 7, 2006.  You cannot be eligible for unemployment benefits on a new regular claim* in Texas, in any other
