Discusssion 31: Dressing for success!

Job Club Heart of Texas, Job Search | 48 comments

Are you really ready for a job? We tell ourselves that we are ready to work, and that we will do anything to get the job of our dreams. We study up on new technology. We brush up on our interview skills and practice in front of a mirror. Although, when the time comes to interview our shoes do not match. Our hair is out of place. We don’t believe that we need to iron our clothes. We self sabotage our chances of getting that job by ignoring the details that come with the interviewing process. We lost that job because we didn’t look ourselves over well enough. We decided to eat a greasy hamburger before the interview. All of these things can contribute to the make or break of the image that we project to others. Are you ready to interview? At the end of the day we all have the responsibility of presenting who we are and how we look to a future employer. Saying ” John Doe doesn’t dress like that”, or “I’ve seen the people in the office…” is a cop-out for not doing what you know needs to be done. They have a job, and they can afford to be relaxed. Can you?  If you’re not sure of what to wear go online or find an up to date fashion magazine. You can look presentable and comfortable.

Job information something to really think about. I think I will look up some fashion tips. The older we get the more out of touch with the fashion we are

Even if what you have on is not the latest style as long as it is clean and pressed and fits it will still make a nice impression.

    Good luck job hunting.

Good morning everyone. Yes, the clothes are important; clean and pressed. Personal grooming is even more important. Fresh from the shower or bath, grooming complete, including clean nails, make a lasting impression. Not overdoing cologne or perfume is as important as anything. Good luck everyone. Susan Wade.

I totally agree. You only get one shot at making a “first impression”.

Good luck everyone and have a blessed day.

Hello Everyone! Good hygeine is as important as dressing appropriately for the job. But, being overdressed for the position can also be a negative thing. I say, dress for the occasion. Common sense goes a long way. Carolyn Walter

My interview today went very well. I have a positive feeling about it. Give me all the Good Karma and positive
vibes you can. I am getting soooooo ready to go back to work in the field I was working in. Interestinly enough, I was brousing the internet this morning early and saw an article about 10 reasons interviews do not go well. I made an effort to apply
an effort to appy them and we will see. (jann page)

I went to the job fair today and was really pretty shocked by the appearance of many of the applicants. I saw wet hair, messy hoodies, lots and lots of t-shirt and jeans ensembles and wrinkled clothes galore.

But I also saw some very nicely dressed, well put-together folks. I bet the employers will look on them more favorably.

    Thanks for the reminders.

LAST DISCUSSION FOR JOB FAIR, MELVIN MENTIONED DRESS, SHIRT, TIE. IMAGE. AND YET I WAS SURPRISED AT HOW PEOPLE SHOWED UP. MAYBE THEY DIDN’T HAVE THE JOB CLUB ADVICE EDGE. THANKS CAMPUSJOBXPRES.

I have taken the part time job (to turn into a full time later in the year) with a starting date of Monday 2/18/13. I am so excited to be back in the medical field. As started earlier, I really wanted this job. The wait has been worth it. (Jann Page)Good luck to all and remember—be patient, it DOES work out.

    Hi,
Had 2 interviews at jobfair today. I dress professionally for interviews, but I always forget my nose ring :). It’s not something I think about, it’s just there. So the little things may stand out the most. I don’t know if I would use a typical teen magazine for clothes ideas. The re-sale shop, Amelia’s Attic (actually I’m not sure its ‘Attic’ anymore) at the Central Texas Market Place has a lady that can help you put a look together and they have nice stuff for reasonable prices.
    GOOD VIBES to Jann Page!

I think I did pretty well. I was little disappointed after I knew it won’t offer any medical and dental insurance even it is full time job.

Good Luck everyone. I had an interview. Unfortunately, they said I was overqualified. They are passing on my info to a department head at their facility who has openings in my field who might be able to help me out. That was positive. Dressing the part is certainly important! I saw lots of people there today who were NOT dressed for potential job interviews and it showed! I saw people not only in jeans, t-shirts, sweats, but also with rags on their heads. You don’t go to job interviews like that!

First of all, I want to congratulate Jann Page on her new job! I will miss her excitement about potential jobs and her encouraging words. Good luck Jann! I talked to many companies and picked up a lot of reading material, today. Although most of the companies were looking to hire for positions that did not fit me, I find that job fairs are great practices for interviewing. They force you to put yourself out there and practice asking questions and answering questions. Hope I will have better luck (jobwise) at the next fair. Have a great rest of the week jobters, this is Ionia Jones signing off! Will miss you Jann!

Congrats to you Jann! I also went to the Job Fair and had an interview. Even though the company representatives weren’t available and Rachel filled in I feel that it went really well and hope to receive a second interview with the company.
Appearence is very important, that first impression is a big plus. I too noticed alot of people wearing jeans and t-shirts, people with wet hair and inappropriate dress attire. Going to Job Fairs, even through not interviewing, still holds a posibility and we should always be ready! Thanks for the Job Fair, I think this was your best to date!

I am so pleased to hear all your comments about how shocked you were to see how other people were dressed because it appears that all of you took the time and effort to look YOUR best. That means that we are doing OUR job by preparing you and coaching you to make good impressions for the employers. And yes, Mr Becker, campusjobxpress Job Club does definitely give you that extra edge. We appreciate all of you and we are so proud of your professional appearance at the Job Fair and Showcase. We are looking forward to the next job event. We will keep you posted. And congratulations Jann Page.

I always feel that first impressions are critical but feel that many don’t have a clue or maybe just don’t care. Not sure which- but either way this is helpful information.

That is an excellent question. I may discuss with Melvin setting up a small seminar for those interested in an interviewing class. Although for now we can schedule a one on one mock interview session or consultation if you would like.
