Four important and vital elements of organizational skills are:
1. Prioritizing
2. Time Management
3. De-clutter
4. A place for everything
When prioritizing, it is important to make a clear list of everything you need to do, in the order of importance. This can be done on a daily basis, on a weekly basis or just a list of things that you need to get done.
With regard to time management, set aside a certain amount of time to get each of your things done. Set a time limit for yourself. Sometimes it can be difficult because you never know what is going to happen in the course of a day. Things do happen -- distractions, emergencies, phone calls! Whatever happens, don't stray away from your time too much and don't put off anything that you can get done within the next few minutes.
De-clutter is one of those things that happen to all of us. Before you know it, you look around at your space and wonder, "How did that happen?" If your clutter has grown astronomically, take it a little at a time. Throw away, shred or file piles at a time. Arrange it into your daily schedule to spend a certain number of minutes on this one task. Put it on your priority list.
A place for everything is very important as well. If you set up files with pertinent names on them to store all your important documents and papers, use them daily. A place for everything does not just pertain to files or documents. It can also mean things in your house, room or office. In your office, designate a place for the scissors, stapler, paper clips, labels, fax forms, etc. In your kitchen or pantry, label your shelves so that everyone knows exactly what goes where. You can do the same for your room or closets. This saves a lot of time and frustration when you are looking for something.
